Borland Brings Back Turbo -- 8:13 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Borland has announced that they are bringing back the "Turbo" line of products. Included in the line will be Turbo Delphi for Win32, Turbo Delphi for .Net, Turbo C++ and Turbo C#. The cool part is that there will be a free "Express" version to download and a "Professional" version for those who need the full-featured product. For more information, visit www.turboexplorer.com. The Master comments: This is just insanely cool. I just hope they really do price the Turbo pro version reasonably. I've never been able to justify buying Delphi for home since 2.0, since it would cost me over $500 to do it, which I just don't have.

J.t.Qbe comments: Sorry T.M., the Professional versions are slated to be "less than $500", which probably means $499.95. But the free version might be just what you need.

As A.T. mentioned, I spent many many hours with Turbo C back in the Olden Days. It was a great system, a top of the line development environment for the late-80s, and the first C compiler which was really affordable to the average Joe.

It's great to see the Turbo line come back, and at such a great price, but I have to ask the question: will it matter? For those who simply want to learn programming, free Unixes already provide a complete learning environment with access to outstanding compilers and tools. Borland needs to make this a better alternative for Windows programming than Microsoft, specifically entry-level programming if they're aiming at hobbyists/learners/students. Can they do it?

I hope so. I certainly do wish them the best.
