Pondering the Imponderable

Talk about your quick service! My DVD burner arrived from NewEgg this afternoon even though I just ordered it late on Tuesday night! It's an LG GSA-4163BB. It supports just about every DVD burning standard under the sun, including DVD-RAM and double layer DVD+R. I bought a spool of Verbatim 16x DVD+R today when I was at Best Buy. I think they had them mislabeled because the display said that they were $29.99 for 50 but the register rang up $37.99. They gave me the lower price anyway.

I burned 4.4G of MP3s to a disc in around six minutes. Not at all bad. Fortunately, my "old" CD-RW/DVD-ROM (which is now in my kids' box) can read the discs it burns. Unfortunately our living room DVD player can't. I wasn't terribly surprised by that since it is several years old. At least now I can make decent backups of my system and not worry about what I'm going to hack off or forget to backup.

One thing's for sure, when they say that nothing comes with an OEM drive, that aren't kidding. There was nothing but the drive itself and a packing list in the box. I have enough cables to choke a horse, so that's not a problem. Since I use Linux, the software would be worthless to me anyway. All I had to do was download the manual from their site. The only reason I even needed that was for the list of recommended media.
