Lindows 2.0 Reviewed

ExtremeTech reviewed Lindows 2.0 and gave it some pretty high marks. I'm glad to see that they seem to have gotten their "Click-n-Run" problems solved. However, the author pretty much dismissed Lindows' ability to run Windows apps. Here's a snip:

Lindows got a lot of press in its early days because it was supposed to run lots of Windows programs. We don't think this is a big deal. If you want to run Windows apps then just run Windows. That said, we can understand how some folks would want to run certain Windows apps that can't be found in Linux.

Just for the heck of it, we stuck the Office 2000 CD in our Lindows box. No luck. We couldn't install it even though Wine was already on the system. The good news though is that Lindows comes with built-in PowerPoint, Excel and Word viewers. So you'll at least be able to view Microsoft Office files.

The ability to run Windows apps was the big claim to fame of Lindows. If it barfs on Office (which is the one app everyone is going to want to run), what do you have left? Basically Debian for newbies. Whether that is a good thing or not is subject to debate. I stick by my original comments on Lindows.

UPDATE! Lindows seems to be majorly backing-off its claims of Windows compatibility. Check out this FAQ item for the details.
