Microsoft Buys AOL -- 3:30 pm CST, Update by J.t.Qbe
AOL has given up the fight. In a widely-criticized deal, the media giant has been sold to Microsoft for a mere $42 billion. AOL representatives cited its recent financial woes as the motivation behind the sale. This is the end, folks. Microsoft now owns Netscape, its former best competitor. It now owns AOL, which MSN could never beat. Some of the details of the deal:- All AOL subscribers will automatically be switched over to MSN and required to sign up for Passport accounts.
- All new PCs will require an AOL/MSN "activation" in order to make Windows XP operational.
- Those annoying AOL CDs you get in the mail every day will now contain Windows XP upgrades for those who are still using 95, 98 or 2K. A bargain at $75.
- Microsoft now becomes owner of all Time-Warner's properties. Bill Gates: your new cable guy.
