ATi's Radeon 8500 Cheats

The Tech Report has an article on how ATi's Radeon 8500 drivers cheat to achieve higher scores in Quake III Arena. The evidence is pretty compelling. It reminds me of when a video card manufacturer was caught hard-coding bits of PC Magazine's PC Labs tests into their products to make them appear to be faster than the competition. D'oh! This "phenomenon" was first detailed on HardOCP. Thanks Shacknews.

The Master comments: "Optimizing" drivers for specific benchmarks was all the rage about 6 or 7 years ago. I don't remember all the specifics, but I do remember this being an issue with S3 and some other companies playing loose and fast to get better numbers. The more things change . . .
