- 1792: The New York Stock Exchange is founded by brokers meeting under a tree located on what is now Wall Street.
- 1875: The first Kentucky Derby is run.
- 1938: The Vinson Naval Act is passed by the U.S. Congress, which provided for a two-ocean Navy.
- 1940: Nazi Germany occupies Brussels, Belgium.
- 1946: President Truman seizes control of railroads, delaying a strike threatened by engineers and trainmen.
- 1954: U.S. Supreme Court descision on Brown vs. Board of Education Topeka, overturning an 1896 ruling on education being "seperate but equal," thus outlawing racially segregated schooling.
- 1973: Senate opens hearings on the Watergate scandal.
- 1987: An Iraqi warplane attacks the U.S.S. Stark with two Exocet missiles, killing 37 American sailors and wounding 62 others.
