NFL Week #16 Final

In the second to last weekend in the NFL, I narrowly edged out Eeyore 11-5 to 10-6. Too bad the last Monday Night game of the year was so lame. Oh well. Year-to-date that makes me 156-84 (.650) while Eeyore is 151-89 (.629).

Testing Mozilla 1.8a5

Well, I thought I was going to get away from using alpha software again, but here I am. I used Mozilla 1.7.5 for about one day before getting tired of functionality lost from Firefox 1.0 and Thunderbird 1.0. Thus, I've been giving Mozilla 1.8a5 a spin. The 1.8 Gecko (the Mozilla rendering engine) branch will be the basis for Firefox 1.1 and Thunderbird 1.1. I've been pretty happy with it. It has crashed a couple of times on me for no particular reason. I like having the tight integration between mail and browser again. The browser has some rendering fixes that are quite nice. The "Slashdot bug" is gone. ESPN.com renders better, but is slower. The UI isn't as slick as for the standalone apps, but Mozilla veterans won't have any issues. All told, I'm happy enough with it to not go back to the separate apps. 1.8a6 should be out relatively early in January with 1.8 beta coming in early February so stay tuned.

ATI Wants Linux Beta Testers

Linux Games linked to a thread on the Rage3D forums where ATI's Matthew Tippet made a call for beta testers for their Linux drivers. Here's the scoop:

I am looking at getting some more beta testers on the Linux beta program. I am looking for people that have a particular mix of hardware and/or a particular mix of software/development skills.

So... Using this thread, can you put together why you think you should be on the beta program, providing justification against how you can provide value to the beta program based on some of the following technologies...

x86_64 (either AMD64 or EM64T)
GLSL
XOrg

In particular I am interested in hearing from FC3 users who have x86_64.

I will monitor this thread for a week or so, and contact the people who have been selected.

If you meet any of the above criteria, head on over and help bring ATI's Linux drivers up to snuff!

First Screenies of Quake IV

Yahoo Games Domain posted the first screenshots of Quake IV, currently in production at Raven. Here's a quick look at where the game starts from project leader, Eric Biessman.

After destroying the Strogg's collective brain and leader -- the Makron -- the Strogg have quickly regrouped under a new and more powerful Makron. However, with the Strogg's planetary defenses still destroyed, Earth's forces can deliver a full and final assault. This time you're not alone. An army of soldiers are fighting with you and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles are at your disposal. Quake IV delivers you deeper into the heart of Stroggos.

Linux client, anyone? Thanks Blue's News.

Update! On Linux Games there is a reference to an article on DOOM3 in a British Linux magazine that includes the following Q&A with Timothee "TTimo" Bessett. Here 'tis:

LXF: Can we expect Quake IV to run on Linux? Will the Linux client be released with the game this time, rather than downloadable a short while after as with Doom 3?

TB: I can't give you any information about Quake IV Linux at this point, but I'd do my best to make sure there is a Linux client out. The Linux release happened a few months after the Windows release, simply because I was working on the full game for Windows until we got gold. My work with id covers more things than Linux.

Hope springs eternal!
