Gamespy and IGN to Merge

Here's further proof that Satan is alive and active in our world. According to Business Wire, Gamespy and IGN are going to merge, creating the most festering gob of gaming something or the other on the Internet. Of course, given how well most Internet company mergers have gone, maybe this will be the beginning of the end. Thanks Shacknews, I think.

OMF:B Gold!

Amazing! I never thought I'd live to see the day, but apparently One Must Fall: Battlegrounds has gone gold! I played OMF: 2097 quite a bit back in the day. I'll be very interested to see what the new version is like. I'll also be interested to see if it works in WineX or not. There's supposed to be a public demo soon. Thanks Blue's News.

Hordes of Information

Originally it seemed like PC gamers were going to have a load of AAA titles to enjoy this Christmas season. Unfortunately, UT2K4 and DOOM3 among others have been pushed off into 2004. The biggest title (for me anyway) is Bioware's epic-level expansion for Neverwinter Nights, Hordes of the Underdark. IGN and Games Domain have posted brief reviews. Warcry posted a short interview with Bioware's Darcy Pajak about the expansion. In other news, the 1.60 patch for NWN, which will enable owners of NWN, SoU, and HotU to all play together online, is expected to be released next week. That will also be the patch that will allow Linux users to enjoy HotU. Thanks go out to Blue's News for the first three links.

In the meantime, I just picked up Shadows of Undrentide again, bringing a Monk character through the first act. I've picked up Deekin as a henchman, so that should be interesting. He, along with others from NWN and SoU, are also available as henchmen in HotU.

Pondering the Imponderable

I know you are all dying to hear the latest installment in my quest to RMA my CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. I checked Airborne Express's website just now and found out that my drive arrived at LG's factory in Hunstville, AL, yesterday around 1 PM. Now it's a matter of "wait and see" until I get my replacement.

It's kind of funny, I only rarely watched DVDs on my computer when I had the drive. Now that I don't have it, there's been a number of occasions when I've wanted to. Hopefully the wait won't be long. Plus, going from 48x burn speeds back to 8x is a bit painful.

Christmas Spirit

This is cool: the guys over at Penny Arcade have teamed up with Seattle Children's Hospital to provide toys for kids at the hospital. They've set up a huge Amazon wish list and have invited readers to buy toys (or donate cash) for sick kids. They estimate that within just a few days they've received over $30,000 in toys and donations. The pictures are impressive.

Miscellany

At this time of year, it's good to review your place in the four stages of life:

  1. You believe in Santa
  2. You don't believe in Santa
  3. You are Santa
  4. You look like Santa

It's also wise to remember that happiness does not come from getting more and more stuff, but from wanting what you have. If you can do that, you must not want a Playstation 2 as much as I do.

My fist would like to meet the marketing bozos who decided that it's cool and attractive to advertise using real people with big open-mouthed smiles. Ugh. And who decided to use the hideous creatures from the Cat In The Hat movie to sell junk at the post office? My fist would like to meet that guy too.

Pondering the Imponderable

You know you're a parent when you can say in all seriousness and with a perfectly straight face, "Do NOT hit your brother with your lightsaber!" Or you're insane. One or the other.

The Master comments: Is that anything like saying "Don't run your brother over with your dump truck!"?
