Pondering the Imponderable

If there's anything more geeky than compiling a new kernel, I'd like to know what it is. Actually the process isn't that hard. I am now running on a freshly compiled 2.4.23 kernel, which fixes a kind of nasty kernel exploit that was recently discovered (see this Slashdot article for the details). It appears that you need local access to exploit it though. Still, better safe than sorry. Nice to know that this bug was patched well before an exploit was found. It just shows that all OSes are vulnerable to exploits like this. The difference is how quickly they are dealt with.

The Master comments: Actually, this bug has been exploited before the kernel updates were widely published -- the Debian server compromise used this kernel bug to gain access to a slew of Debian systems.

A.T. Hun comments: Of course, the only way they were able to use the exploit was because one of the Debian developers' password had been compromised.

NFL Week #13 Final

Well, we began the weekend like we started it, with a loss. I ended up 10-6 while Eeyore went 8-8. Year-to-date that makes me 127-65 (.661) and her 125-67 (.651). Tune in next Saturday for more NFL phun!

Pondering the Imponderable

A guy from Airborne Express showed up 1/2 hour earlier than anticipated this morning to pick up my CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. It is being sent second-day, so it should arrive at LG's Huntsville, AL, warehouse on Wednesday. We'll see how long it takes to get the new one back. I assume that I will only have my remaining warranty and not the full year. Stay tuned for more adventures in RMA.

NFL Week #13 So Far

With tonight's game left, I am 10-5 while Eeyore is 8-7. We both have the Titans tonight, so I'll pick up a couple of games on her. It would have been even better, had I gone with my original plan of picking the opposite games on Thanksgiving. I just didn't have the courage to pull the trigger on it.

In a related story, my Fightin' Wombats thumped the leader of the other division to end this fantasy footbal regular season at 11-2. The playoffs start next weekend! Hope I don't choke!

Favre Sandwich

In case you wondered, no, I am not done enjoying the Lions' Thanksgiving Day win over the Packers. To help you enjoy this victory with me, I present this picture that appeared in the local paper, showing Packers' QB Brett Favre being sandwiched by a pair of Lions.
