Pondering the Imponderable

My wife and I finally got our advance Child Tax Credit check from the government today. It's only about three months late. Oh well. At least now I can pay off some bills.

Steam Update Released, Pulled

Valve released an update to their Steam content delivery system tonight. Not long afterwards, the update was pulled. You can get all the details on their Steam news page. Steam is a massive undertaking. Given the problems they've already had, to say nothing of the leak of the Half-Life 2 code, you have to wonder about Steam's future. Thanks Blue's News.

NFL Week #7 Final

Well, the ending of tonight's game was more exciting than, well, the rest of the game. At any rate, I managed to catch up to Eeyore by going 10-4 while she went 7-7. That gives us identical 67-35 (.657) records. For your historical pleasure, last year after week seven I was 59-40 (.596) and Eeyore is 52-47 (.525). Obviously Eeyore wins the coveted "most improved" award.

Pondering the Imponderable

I'm now using a freshly home-compiled version of Mozilla 1.5. There aren't many obvious changes from the 1.4 series, except that the mail spellchecker is now integrated. You don't have to download it separately from Mozdev. You know you are an insufferable geek when compiling Mozilla makes you feel incredibly virile. That and the four kids.

KDE Turns Seven!

A big happy seventh birthday to KDE, my favorite Linux desktop. I originally started out using Gnome (mainly because it was what Red Hat defaulted to). Once I tried KDE, I was hooked. It may be a little big, but it can do everything you want and then some. I never knew that the "K" initially stood for "Kool." Good thing it just stands for "K" now. Congratulations to all the developers for a job well done! Keep up the good work! Thanks Slashdot.

Winamp 5 Beta

According to this thread on the Winamp forums the Winamp 5 beta release has been put up for download. I've been running this over the weekend, and so far I'm reasonably pleased with it. It's pretty stable, works like Winamp 2, but has all the funky Winamp 3 skin goodness. I haven't had any crashes so far, so good deal I guess. YMMV :-)
