Gateway ditches Amiga

According to this news.com article, Gateway dumps the Amiga name and hardware, Gateway has decided to completely scrap and sell off the Amiga computer system. Wow. I can hear a LOT of people in Europe screaming right now.

The Amiga is VERY popular in Europe, much more so that the IBM PC. Which is why you still find software being ported to it today.

NHL 2000 Roster Update

This one slipped by me. EA Sports released a new roster update for NHL 2000 on December 10. You can download it from their NHL 2000 page.

Whee!

I just finished Quake III Arena on the "Hurt Me Plenty" difficulty setting. Tier 6 wasn't as hard as I thought it would be (except Q3DM16, which gives me fits). Xaero on Q3Tourney6 is nuts. It's awful fun railing the switch when he's on the BFG platform :)

I wanted to get aquainted with the maps before cranking up the difficulty. I'm going to try on Hardcore now! For those of you who beat the game on Nightmare, my hat is off to you.

UT Tweaks

PlanetUnreal has updated their Unreal Tournament Tweaks page. Included is information on how to disable the opening fly-through cutscene (thank heavens!). Thanks VoodooExtreme.

Ask Hook

Billy W. and the boyz have slapped up a new issue of Ask Hook. Brian Hook (formerly of id, currently of Verant) answers two musical questions: 1) Do certain game makers have video card makers' ears more than others? and 2) Why do people play first-person shooters when they are all derivative and no one has fun?

UT FAQ

I gotcher FAQ right here (sorry, slipping into my "New Yorker" mode this morning). GameFAQs has updated their Unreal Tournament FAQ. Check it out. Thanks Blue.

Brandon Reinhart .plan Update

Epic's Brandon "GreenMarine, the .plan Updating Machine" Reinhart updated his .plan (oddly enough) with a call for all interested Unreal Engine programmers to join them in the UT open-source discussions.
If you are interested in C++ programming with the UT open source, please join the openut-development list at sourceforge. We are getting into some nitty gritty details that will definitely help programmers get to know the Unreal engine.

In fact, licensees might be interested in joining as well.

You can find the list signup at openut.sourceforge.net on the root project page.

The Haus/Linux

Well, I figured I'd throw up a progress report, since somebody out there might be interested. Our Haus Linux version is coming along. I've got the site ported over except for some changes that occured in the last month or so. I'm currently working on some new features for the site (including a messageboard, Q3A ranking status system, and a downloads area), and porting over the game-server related stuff.

PHP, mySQL, and Red Hat are wonderful tools, and for server-type computing are really hard to beat.

NV-15 Ramp-Up

The rumblings are getting louder of NVIDIA ramping up production for their spring-refresh product, the NV-15, by the end of this month or in February. I would be VERY interested to see what the fillrate will be on that chip. If it's even a modest improvement, 3dfx is in hot water.

Quake 3 Female Model/Skins/Sounds

Trillian from QGirlz sent me this email about a competition they are having to design female models, skins, and sounds for Quake III Arena. Here's the scoop:
The number of females making their mark on the gaming community is rapidly increasing. And although many gaming companies are offering more opportunities to play female characters, there is still a need of more appealing choices for female gamers. In response to this, QGirlZ with support from Polycount are launching a contest to create a new female model for Quake 3 Arena based on feedback from female gamers themselves.

Over 300 female gamers were contacted and asked one basic question, "What would you like to see in a female model?" The response was overwhelming and surprisingly varied. While some asked for a more realistic model showcasing a solid and muscular body... others asked for a bit of fantasy in a female model with a perfect shape... and some wondered why make it human... :c)

What is the best thing about this contest? It appeals to such a wide variety of talents - from 3D modeling to graphic design to sound recording. Plus there are some great prizes for the best entries.

So spread the word and start designing! January 1st, 2000 marks the start of the first phase in the contest - the Model competition. Visit the contest website for further details!
