Pondering the Imponderable -- 10:20 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
I hope that all those people who were hording food and water, building bunkers, and arming themselves to the teeth feel like the idiots we all knew they were some time ago. Y2K cost them a small fortunte alright, and they have no one to blame but themselves. Now the REAL fun is going to be seeing how many hard drives fail. Many corporations decided to shut down their networks and web servers fearing Y2K problems/attacks. The problem is that hard drives that have been run for so long don't always like coming back up after they are shut down. This News.Com article describes the problem. Ahh yes, more self-inflicted pain . . .
QuakeWorld and Doom? -- 10:15 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
I saw this very interesting news post on Stomped. Here's to hoping he is successful!John Faulkenberry, who worked on Half-Life: Opposing Force, was on Efnet #doomroom last night. He told me he is wanting to combine the Quakeworld net code with Doom to allow Doom to be playable on the net and also have dedicated Doom servers. Hopefully he will be able to get that done because I think that'd be great fun. I would love to get some more Doom action going for sure.
More on UT Linux -- 10:09 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Brandon "GreenMarine" Reinhart wins the big award for being the first to update his .plan in the new year. GreenMarine takes home a lovely set of luggage (or whatever you win for this sort of thing). Anyway, his update deals with more news on the open-source release of Unreal Tournament for Linux. He also expresses his dismay that there was no nuclear catastrophe last night. Fun guy, that GreenMarine. Here's a snip:I've released the open source archive at the sourceforge page. You can get there from openut.sourceforge.net.
The file is available in tar/gz and zip formats. The archive includes stuff for win32 and Linux. All of the public engine headers are included, so you can start working on extended mods and stuff.
Happy New Year -- 12:42 am CST, Update by The Master
From all of us at The Haus, to all of you, a happy and peaceful New Year. The Master comments: Dang it-it's NOT the new millenium! Deal with it, okay?
A.T. Hun comments: Not for another 366 days it isn't. And the only non-Y2K-compliant piece of software I've found so far? My FTP client. Go figure.
Brandon Reinhart .plan update -- 12:40 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
Epic's Brandon "Green Marine" Reinhart updated his .plan with news of a patch for Unreal Tournament for Linux, open source issues, and the forthcoming 403 patch. Here's a snip:This patch is version 402B and is a Linux patch only. It contains fixes for two critical Linux issues:It also has a few other fixes and incidentals.
- UT Linux now runs under Enlightenment.
- UT Linux will properly shutdown glide after a critical crash.
There will be no 402B patch for Windows. The next multiplatform UT patch will be 403 (we'll probably release the first UT expansion pack around that time).

System Resources -- 11:09 am CST, Update by The Master
Welcome to the **** that is Windows 3.x/9x system resources. Microsoft has always had a very limited method of allocating things like windows, icons, fonts, and menus, and it's rearing its ugly head for Compaq users according to this news.com article. I feel your pain folks :-)Mutator FAQ -- 10:36 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
The Mutation Device, your one-stop for all your Unreal Tournament mutator needs, has posted The Mutators FAQ in Windows help format. My $.02: you can take your different game styles and different weapons with alt-fire. The coolest thing about Unreal Tournament is mutators.Y2K -- 12:01 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun
T-minus 24 hours and counting . . . Let's hope The Master's news script is compatible :)The Master comments: Well, if it isn't, I guess I'll be doing some late-night debugging... OH, and BTW: so far the world's still here, and they're through 2000 in China. Good sign :-)
