Slackware 12.0 Initial Impressions

I've been using Slackware 12.0 for about a week now, so I think I can give some updated impressions of it. The big change includes HAL and dbus support. What that means in practical terms is that I haven't typed the command mount in a long time. If I pop in a CD or a CompactFlash card, it is automatically detected and KDE asks what to do with it. My only complaint with this is that KDE isn't clear on when files are done being copied to the device and it is safe to remove it.

In other minor news, I had to pass acpi=off to the kernel at boot to get my keyboard to work. My mobo has had no end of problems with various incarnations of ACPI support, so this isn't a Slackware-specific issue or even a Linux-specific one for that matter. I also figured out how to get Cedega working.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the upgrade. In typical Slackware fashion it is relatively cutting edge without sacrificing stability. I know that Slack is as "Old School" of a distro as you are going to find, but that remains OK in my book.

MOO 2/3 Digital Releases?

According to a community thread on the Atari forums, Atari is preparing to release Master of Orion 2 and 3 as digital downloads. The information in the thread is pretty slim to this point. Hopefully there will be something more official soon.
