13 Things That Do Not Make Sense

NewScientistSpace has a fascinating article on 13 things that do not make sense, where they review 13 different items in physics and chemistry that are currently unresolvable by our knowledge of the universe. This is fascinating stuff. I also really need to narrow down my range of interests :-)

A.T. Hun comments: Nnnoo! It can't be! Scientists can figure out anything! They are never wrong or change their minds! We can put our full faith and confidence in them!

Pondering the Imponderable

Well, tax time is approaching. I decided to seize the bull by the horns of a dilemma and get my taxes done early this year. Turns out we overpaid the state and fed about a grand total. I never understand why people are so thrilled when they get a big tax return. All that means is that you allowed the government to use your money interest-free for a year. Of course, I'd much rather have it that way than to find out that I owe a grand.

The Master comments: While it wasn't a grand, I've owed in the past. It sucked. I'll overpay thanks.

Bleh

I stayed up until 1 am last night watching a Challenger disaster special on the National Geographic Channel. While I already knew most of what I saw in the show, this was a stark reminder of how one should never criticize a scrub of a NASA launch. Better to scrub a hundred times than to kill a crew or lose a mission because of media pressure on your reputation.

If you've been watching the news, RIM lost their final Blackberry patent appeal. I desperately hope they're forced to shut down completely. If I was them, I'd just pull the plug on everyone in the US--including the government. It's about time the patent system killed a useful tool, just to prove how stupid the whole thing has become.
