Quake IV Linux Binaries Released

Well, that didn't take TTimo very long! The Linux binaries for Quake IV have been released. There are installation instructions on that page as well as minimum requirements. Looks like I may be out of luck since the minimum processor is an Athlon XP 2000+, which is obviously faster than my 1800+. I'll still give it a spin if a demo is released.

Bleh: A NICE XP Feature

Just discovered this neat bit: on Windows XP you can use netstat -ab to list all active ports on your network stack, and the -b function will list all the apps/dlls that are using those ports. This is a godsend when you're trying to figure out what the heck is holding that port open. May I add that iTunes has way too many open ports.

OpenOffice.org Ponderings

One of my favorite parts of OpenOffice.org 2.0RC1 is the way it handles timed backups. OOo 1.x saved the actual file every time. That was troublesome for me because I would often edit old files to create new ones in the same format. As soon as an auto-save occurred, the original file would be overwritten. OOo 2.0 saves the file in a temporary location in case of a crash, but does not overwrite the original file. No more accidentally overwriting old files for me! I know it's a small thing, but when you use a program daily like I do, that small thing becomes a big deal.

Quake IV Linux FAQ

id's Timothee "TTimo" Besset has posted a Quake IV in Linux FAQ. Right now the binaries are not available. I'm hoping that they whip up a Linux demo so I can see if this bad boy will actually run on my box or not. Thanks Linux Games.
