Rovers Chug Merrily Along

Amazingly the two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, keep chugging along even mysteriously picking up power as they go along. It's nice to see when NASA gets one right every so often. The twin missions were pretty bold. They've exceeded everybody's expectations.

The Master comments: The success of the Mars rovers has also been mirrored in the Cassini mission to Saturn. So far, everything in these two missions seems to be going right. Nice change of pace, considering. Now, I just want to see NASA getting back on the road to manned space flight.

Fox 11: Up Yours

I'd like to extend a very special middle finger to the folks at Fox 11 in Green Bay who, in their infinite wisdom, decided to show a Rambo movie right now instead of the Lions game. Yes, I already called them and read them the riot act. Idiots.

NFL Week #9

Tired. So tired. Sleep. Must sleep. Sleep good. But first, here are my picks for this weekend's games: Jets, Bengals, Lions, Dolphins, Steelers, Chiefs, Panthers, Chargers, Seahawks, Giants, Patriots, Broncos, Ravens, Colts. Once again, I'm not exactly doing cartwheels about some of these picks. Too many bad teams playing each other.

The Master comments: Eeyore was pretty much feeling the same about this week, and that resulted in the only difference: E picked the Cowboys. Fear.

NVIDIA 6629 Linux Drivers Released

NVIDIA has released version 1.0-6629 of their Linux drivers. If you use a 2.6 kernel and play DOOM3, you want to get these ASAP. Why? Here's a quick comparison for you:

Kernel 2.6.8.1, NVIDIA drivers 6111:
800x600, medium detail, shadows on: 24.7 fps
800x600, medium detail, shadows off: 29.2 fps

Kernel 2.6.9, NVIDIA drivers 6629:
800x600, medium detail, shadows on: 32.9 fps
800x600, medium detail, shadows off: almost 40 fps

I didn't write down the exact fps for the shadows off option, because I was too busy having a heart attack. Needless to say, I'll be doing some more benchmarking later. Thanks Linux Games.

Update! I ran the shadows off benchmark again and got exactly 40 fps. Unfortunately, I ran into kernel 2.6.9's kswapd bug. I've got to apply the patch for it. Otherwise kswapd ends up taking up about 75% of the CPU when memory starts to get full. Feature.
