Bad Karma

Or, instant karma's going to get you. There's a nasty bug in the Karma physics in UT2K4. I know it's showing up in Linux, not sure about other OSes. It causes me to crash to desktop. I was toward the end of a hard-fought game on Bombing Run (up 14-0) just now when it crashed. The log file complains of a "KIntersect" problem. Thankfully, icculus knows about it and is working on a fix. He had some new binaries that he had hoped would fix it, but sadly they did not.

Bleh

Got a couple of rounds of UT2K4 in last night. Found out a couple of things:

  1. The bots are a LOT smarter in the real game versus the demo. In the demo I had a pattern down that would allow me to take over the map in about 4 minutes. In the new one the bots put up a massive fight on the corner nodes almost immediately.
  2. The demo is a LOT faster in map loads. However, this just might be fragmentation of my hard drive. Not so sure on that. The full game is also quite a bit more stuttery in places. I wonder if the bot AI improvements are weighing down the processor a bit.
  3. The sound is much more lush in the full game. Go figure :-)

Overall, I'm liking it. Need a bit more practice, then I think it's definitely time to get the old THoP group together.

Pondering the Imponderable

Well, loyal Haus reader Ryan and I got VoIP working with UT2K4. Sadly it will not work if I'm running a listen server. I have no idea why that is. It's something with the game, not an error on my part. I had to run a dedicated server and then log into it with the client. That worked pretty well--until I added enough bots for a Torlan Onslaught game. It quickly became a slideshow. I think I'd need a lot more memory and CPU horsepower to pull that one off. Having said that, VoIP did work pretty nicely. The headset that comes with the SE version of the game is nothing spectacular, but it gets the job done. The mic is better than I expected. Now that The Master has the game, we'll have to get THoP revived!

And tomorrow . . . I do my taxes. Rah!

Eeyore just called me. I now own Unreal Tournament 2004. Thank goodness. I should be able to tell the sordid story of how I got it soon.
