All-Star Madness

Quite a day for sports fans! The NHL All-Star game was very exciting from beginning to end and not a 15-12 fiasco or anything like that. I only saw the second half of the NFL's Pro Bowl but to see the NFC come back from a 38-13 deficit to win 55-52 was a lot of fun. It gets me geared up for the new arena league season. Speaking of which, I should check out the AFL2 team in Green Bay this year . . .

Pondering the Imponderable

Sometimes, you get too cutesy. Somewhere along the line between Wednesday and Friday, that happened to me. I did something that screwed up my system so that I could only print from OpenOffice. I tried installing CUPS to see if that would help. I spent about four hours trying to fix it. After I gave up and was trying to fall asleep, it hit me. Something (one of the KDE 3.2 packages I installed?) had trodden on my Ghostscript installation. A quick reinstall of that package later and everything's right with the world again. The good news is that CUPS is pretty cool and much easier to manage than the old LPR way.

One of the things I tried was to reinstall the KDE 3.1 packages. That didn't help, but it did remind me of how much I like 3.2. 3.1 was noticably slower. Between KDE 3.2 and the 2.6 kernel's preempting, my system's responses are much snappier. This is really noticeable when playing a game or running OpenOffice while Folding@Home is running in the background. No more random lagginess. Cool stuff.

Why is it that I almost derive masochistic pleasure from messing something up with my system and then having to fix it? It would have been a lot more pleasurable if I hadn't had so much work to do.

The Master comments: That sounds like when something explodes at work and we spend all night working on it. Somehow, this form of self-torture is fun. I've never understood why . . .
