Red Hat Sues SCO

Gadzooks! Even though I put a moratorium on any SCO articles, this one really surprised me. Red Hat announced that it will sue SCO to stop them from spreading FUD about Linux's legality. News.com has more. Here's a snip:

"We filed this complaint to stop SCO from making unsubstantiated and untrue public statements attacking Red Hat Linux and the integrity of the open-source software development process," Mark Webbink, Red Hat's general counsel, said in a prepared statement. "Red Hat is confident that its current and future customers will continue to realize the significant value that our Red Hat Linux platform provides without interruption."

SCO's rumblings must really have been affecting Red Hat for them to sue. All I can say is, "More power to them!" I also hope IBM and others will contribute to their defense fund. Thanks Slashdot.

More EMusic

I recently resubscribed to EMusic because they added some new albums that I wanted to check out (most notably, a couple by The Cult). I also noticed that they have reencoded the vast majority of their mp3s at a variable bitrate, averaging about 192K. The sound quality is noticably better than the old 128K fixed encoding. Thus, I'm redownloading some of the albums that I had snagged before. The files are substantially bigger now, but I think the sound quality is worth it.

The only problem I ran into is that their download manager didn't want to let me download anything. After searching their forums, I found you could either comment out the line in emusicdlm that starts with export or just run emusicdlm-bin directly and everything works fine. I'm not doing cartwheels about the program, but it works.
