So Easy, Even A.T. Hun Can Do It!

Few phrases strike fear into more people's hearts than the words "kernel upgrade." Roling your own kernel still isn't the most fun thing in the world, but modern distros have made upgrading a snap. I just completed my first kernel upgrade in Slackware following this security advisory. I just had to download the packages, run upgradepkg, run lilo, and I was done. Piece o' cake. I also made a new boot disk (Remember this step, kids! You'll thank me later). The only thing was that I had to remember to set /etc/inittab to boot to a console instead of to X so I could recompile the NVIDIA kernel module. After having made that mistake several times, I'm pretty good at avoiding it now.

Shadows of Undrentide Review

Gamespy slapped up a review of Shadows of Undrentide, the new expansion for Bioware's Neverwinter Nights. It sounds pretty much like what I would have expected. If you like NWN, here's more of it. My guess is that the best part of the expansion will be what mod makers do with it. Thanks Shacknews.

New OSX version of Quake 3

id Software's Graeme Devine updated his .plan with word of a new OSX 10.2 version of Quake 3 available on the Id FTP site:

There's a new build of Quake3 for Mac OS X on the id ftp server. This is for 10.2 or later only. This version fixes support for certain add in audio sound cards, adds a brand new ppc QVM compiler, and "tada" adds Altivec code to aid MD3 rendering. Thanks go to Apple and especially Ken Dyke over there for making this happen.

A.T. Hun comments: He updated his .plan again with word that a new build has been uploaded due to some problems with gcc 3.1.
