Palm Buys Handspring

I saw on CNBC this morning (yes, I was watching CNBC this morning) that Palm is buying Handspring. Handspring stockholders will receive .09 shares of Palm for each Handspring share they own. Here's a link to the press release. I'm sure there will be more news on this later.

My take? Palm doesn't have anything with the wireless features of the Treo and Handspring hasn't produced any standard PDAs in a while. Handspring originally was a break-off company started by some of the initial founders of Palm, so I guess we've now come full circle. Sadly, Handspring was never able to make its Springboard expansion modules take off, mainly because the modules cost almost as much as the Visor itself. If the modules could have been more affordable, the Visor would probably still exist, and Handspring might very well have become the stronger company. Nevertheless, I still like my Visor Deluxe and have yet to find anything that would make a worthwhile and cost-effective replacement.

A Lawyer's Look at SCO's Lawsuit

AlwaysOn posted an article by an intellectual property lawyer who looks at SCO's lawsuit against IBM. I won't give away all the good bits, but the title of the article is "SCO & UNIX: A Comedy of Errors." It's interesting to hear about this from someone who is actually involved in this sort of thing. Thanks Linux Today.

HardOCP on Futuremark

Kyle at HardOCP posted this editorial on Futuremark and the recent weirdness surrounding it. What does he suggest we do? It might surprise you.

I humbly ask that anyone evaluating computer hardware to stop publishing the game demo scores taken from 3DMark03. The media is greatly responsible for giving FutureMark its power in the industry and it is my thought that if we work collectively, we can shift that power to a more responsible set of real world utilities that I suggest will become a reality this year.

How does he come to that conclusion and why do I agree with him? Read the article to find out.
