WineX 3.0 Released

Transgaming has released version 3.0 of WineX, their gaming fork of WINE. You can read the release notes and check out the official announcement thread. They switched to pthreads from glibc for threading so hopefully the glibc 2.3 problems have been fixed. Thanks Slashdot.

UPDATE! I tested it with the only game I currently play in WineX: Jedi Knight II. It does indeed seem to speed things up over WineX 2.x. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that I was playing it under Windows. With all this talk of Half-Life, I'm toying with the idea of busting out my CDs and trying that one again.

IGN Buys VE

Straight from the "fool and his money" department: IGN, apparently still thinking it's the 90s, have purchased Voodoo Extreme. No word on the amounts, which are speculated to be in the tens of dollars :) Now I have absolutely nothing against VE, but I have trouble seeing what IGN would see in buying them unless it was for a song.

Compile Your Own Mozilla!

I've been having some random problems with xft-enabled version of Mozilla that came with Mandrake 9.1. Things just seemed to get weirder. So, following the directions on this site I download the source for Mozilla 1.4 alpha and compiled it on my own. It took a while (around 45 minutes on my Athlon XP 1800+), but the results were definitely worth it. 99% of my problems have disappeared. If this fixes the "random crashing when navigating ESPN.com" problem, we've got ourselves a winner. Try it! It's not that hard--even I can do it!

Wired on DOOM

Wired posted a three-page article on the new DOOM, hopefully coming this Fall from id software. Included are some screenshots that I don't think I've seen before. This will probably be the first game to make my box officially choke.

The Master comments: Just finished the article. Good read, highly recommended.
