Is Windows Ready for the Desktop? -- 9:26 pm CST, Update by J.t.Qbe

As Microsoft Windows finds greater and greater acceptance in the computing world, maybe it's time to ask the question: is Windows ready for the big time? This writer thinks so. Note to the humor-impaired: this is satire, a form of humor. Thanks for the laughs, OSNews.

No Unreal II Demo -- 9:04 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Unreality found a post on the Infogrames forums indicating that there will not be a demo released for Unreal II. Here's a snip:

As much as we‘d like to create a ‘true‘ demo, it‘s simply not possible. Legend have moved on to other projects and the production of a demo - even from already existing levels would require time and effort that we just don‘t have. It would then have to go through QA - another organization that is working on other projects and cannot dedicate time to a UII demo. It‘s all about the allocation of ‘assets‘.

I'm sure the Unreal fans would like to "allocate some assets" over this. No word on when the original Unreal demo will be out either. Thanks Blue's News.

GeForce FX 5800 Ultra Reviews -- 9:56 am CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Boy, you'd think an NDA expired today or something :) The first reviews of NVIDIA's long-awaited GeForce FX have hit the 'Net. You can get reviews from all the usual suspects. My favorite sites for these kind of things are HardOCP and AnandTech. Basically the card is faster than the GeForce 4 and even the Radeon 9700 in certain tests. Looks like NVIDIA will have to do some major driver tweaking to make this worth the cash. Of course, now that they've made the difficult transition to .13u, future chips should come more quickly.

Well, the Bucs have won the Super Bowl. I predicted they would, and pulled for them. Maybe since they finally won, there's actually hope for the Lions! Nah . . .

Ryan "icculus" Gordon made a news post about the various new clients he showed off at the Linux World Expo. Here's a snip:

• Medal of Honor is not yet available as a Linux client. There's no audio output, since I don't have a license to use Miles Sound System, so I have to rip that out and write some OpenAL code. That will take time. The Spearhead expansion has a crashbug in the renderer on some maps, but otherwise seems to be as functional as the original Allied Assault at this point. When it's done, I'll make the binaries for Allied Assault and Spearhead available. You'll need some way to extract the data files from the original retail discs (which might mean using Wine or Windows). Hopefully TuxGames will come up with a good solution, so hold off on buying the game until we all figure out what's what.
• Serious Sam: The Second Encounter seems relatively solid (er...as solid as The First Encounter, at least), so after I clean up a few things, I'll put this out for beta. You'll need the retail Second Encounter disc, which was 20 bucks brand new, and should be 5 to 10 bucks in the discount bin by now.

As soon as the SS:SE beta is posted, I'll install it and let you know how it works.
