America's Army Impressions

I downloaded the massive (208M) America's Army: Operation game, powered by the Unreal Engine. It plays rather nicely on my system. I've never fired an M16, so I can't say how comparable it is, but I have a friend that went through basic training so I could ask him. The only problem about the game that I've heard is that you have to play the training missions (after the third one) online and only HomeLanFed had servers running. There's supposed to be a patch available soon to allow for dedicated servers. Otherwise, the game is cool and it's free. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Janis Ian on MP3

There's a fascinating article on music downloads via the Internet over on www.janisian.com, Janis Ian's website. It's interesting to see a recording artist comment on the music industry and its attitude towards the Internet and new music technology in general. Here's a particularly good quote (in my opinion, of course):
And it's difficult to convince an educated audience that artists and record labels are about to go down the drain because they, the consumer, are downloading music. Particularly when they're paying $50-$125 apiece for concert tickets, and $15.99 for a new CD they know costs less than a dollar to manufacture and distribute.

A.T. Hun comments: Wow. That is a really good article. I especially like the information at the end that shows unless you sell a zillion records, the record company owns you. Maybe if there are some smart artists out there, they could go all MP3 or sell their CDs only online and cut out the RIAA, the middlemen, and the stores altogether. Any takers?

J.t.Qbe comments: Actually, I think some already do that.

Beer: The Next Health Food

Woo hoo! In their quest to discover why men frequently have stronger bones than women, scientists have discovered that men get much more silicon in their diets. A primary source of easily-absorbed silicon: beer. Read all about it and pass me a Salvator!

A.T. Hun comments: That's the thing. You can get some good nutrition through beer, especially darker beers. The key is moderation. Drinking a case and a half of Schlitz isn't going on a health kick. Plus, we all know what Monty Python says about American megabrews.
