GPUs and UT2003

AnandTech posted another round of benchmarks with Unreal Tournament 2003 using the most recent (and not so recent) video cards. While the results are interesting, I still feel they aren't of a whole lot of use until the UT2K3 demo is out and they can be verified. It's not that I distrust Anand's site, it's just that these things should be repeatable. Nevertheless, it does give you an idea of how your card will perform and whether or not an upgrade is worthwhile. Looks like my GeForce3 Ti200 should be able to do just fine. I was rather impressed at how well the GeForce2 Ultra did on some of the benchmarks.

Censorware Blocks SourceForge

SmartFilter, a content censoring/blocking system, blocks access to all sourceforge.net pages. Slashdot is running the story. The reason given is that sourceforge.net is an "MP3" site. Ummm, yeah. For those of you not in the know, Sourceforge offers hosting for open-source projects. This is precisely why I am against these kinds of "filters." They just don't work. "Smart"Filter indeed.

J.t.Qbe comments: If it's truly a smart filter, it'll be updateable so that sites like this can be allowed once the company is notified. The Slashdot writeup has conspiracy overtones (the filter allows Microsoft sites, but not Sourceforge), but the truth is that Slashdot has an axe to grind on filtering. Yes, this is a misstep--but does that mean that all filtering should be thrown out? Definitely not: I don't want the local libraries providing access to internet filth to anyone who wants it. Period.

ThreeWave CTF 1.6 Released

The ThreeWave team has released version 1.6 of their CTF mod for Quake III Arena. Currently there is only a 469K ZIP file upgrade from 1.5 available. A Windows installer and full version will be available soon. This release mainly fixed some minor bugs with 1.5. Thanks Blue's News.

New Ren and Stimpy?

According to the TV Guide Online, TNN has bought the rights to Ren and Stimpy from Nickelodeon. Ren and Stimpy is one of my favorite cartoons of all-time until Nick forced creator John Kricfalusi out. According to the article, TNN will be running all the episodes uncut and are in discussions with John K to produce new ones. They will even show one never-before-seen episode that was deemed too violent by Nick. Rock! Thanks Slashdot.
