Charges Dropped Against Sklyarov

According to the Associated Press, the United States government is dropping charges against Dmitry Sklyarov. He had been accused of violations under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act for revealing holes in Adobe's ebook format. It is somewhat unfortunate that this didn't go to trial so that the high court would have a chance to review the constitutionality of the DMCA. Hopefully that will come soon enough. Thanks Slashdot.

RtCW Win32 Demo Released

As promised, the demo of Return to Castle Wolfenstein has been released. This is the Windows (95/98/2K/XP) version only. It weighs in at 114.1M. Blue's News has a list of mirrors. The demo is single-player only.

UPDATE! Well, I downloaded it, rebooted to Windows (blech) and installed it. While it does seem like it would be a fun game to play, my system is definitely too underpowered for it. The action was quite choppy even with the options really turned down. That's not a big shock since my box basically has the minimum requirements. So while it's cool (I really like the multiplayer test), my system will need an overhaul before it's worth buying for me.

Update! The Master I tried it out here, and it's a sweet game. A lot creepy (I jumped at least once) but wow. Excellent job on this game, a must-get for me-and I'm bored to tears of FPS games :-)

J.t.Qbe comments: I had to give it a try too, and wow! Very impressive. I'd be more tempted to get it if it looked better on my system--I have an ATI Xpert 128 and every scene has some annoying imperfections. Anyway, I picked up No One Lives Forever on sale a few weeks ago and need to play that first!

Wolfie Demo Tomorrow?

According to IGN, rumors are floating about that a demo for Return to Castle Wolfenstein will be released tomorrow. That'd be a good thing. One warning: if you click on that link and don't allow their site to set a cookie, you will be stuck viewing an almost lethally stupid ad for their print version eternally. Thanks Blue.

UPDATE! Blue got confirmation from Activision that the demo will indeed be released at 2:00 P.M. U.S. Eastern time tomorrow. No word on if this will be Windows only or if they will have demos for Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Pondering the Imponderable

Dear Santa. Please give me a new Athlon XP system. While I'm dreaming, I'd like a pony too. Your pal, A.T.

The Master comments: Heh-for the first time in a long time, I'm quite satisfied with my PC hardware :-) I'd love an OS upgrade, but I'm torn between doing a dual boot with W2K or Linux, or installing XP (ick) or installing W2k AND linux on a new HD. Ack, like I have time for any of this crud.
