MS To Allow Non-IE Browsers Again

And who says that a giant can't turn on a dime? After a ton of bad press, Microsoft is going to allow non-IE browsers to access its MSN site again. Read all about it at BrowserWatch. Oops, I guess every other browser isn't ready to roll over dead yet.

Go Way Back With The Haus

On Blue's News today, I saw a link to the Internet WayBack Machine which takes archival snapshots of websites at various times. For kicks, I put in www.thehaus.net. Sure enough, there we are! Unfortunately, they seem to be experiencing technical difficulties right now.

Draeker Responds to TransGaming

Loki's Scott Draeker gave his response to TransGaming's efforts to get Windows games to run in Linux under WINE. Here's a snip:
The reason people use Linux is not because it's a great way to run Windows software. If you want Windows software then you should be running Windows. Our customers use Linux to run Linux software.
Although Draeker obviously has a vested interest, I have to agree with him. I use Linux because I got sick of Win98 and wasn't going to go to XP no matter what. Now, I'd love to get Diablo II going in Linux. If a port is impossible, TransGaming's solution may have merit. However a native port that can take advantage of Linux's strengths will always be preferable. Thanks Linux Games.

MSN.com Locks Out Non-IE Browsers

CNet is reporting that MSN.com is locking out certain versions of non-Internet Explorer web browsers. Their argument is "standards compliance." Sure. Like IE is standards compliant. Thanks Linux Today.

On a related note, I noticed that ESPN.com and NFL.com's fantasy league pages were freaking out in Mozilla recently. It was then that I discovered that both are now on MSN's network. Thankfully I have discovered that the problem is not specific to Mozilla. IE had the same problems in Windows. Sometimes their image server can't keep up. At periods of high traffic (which really sucks when you are trying to update your fantasy roster at the last minute), the pages load slowly and do not display properly. Sigh.

NFL Week #7

Man, what an awful week. 3-10. Unimaginable. Ack. Oh, and did I mention that my fantasy team got its butt kicked too? I'm down to 2-4 in that now. Anyway, since there is a game tonight and I'm leaving tomorrow, here are my ph34rless predictions for week #7. May God have mercy on my soul. Colts, Jets, Rams, Bears, Lions (eep!), Ravens, Bucs, Cardinals, Giants, Dolphins, Chargers (Flutie's revenge!), Eagles, Broncos, Steelers. There's a lot of close games in there. This could be great or it could get very ugly again.

The Master comments: Eeyore's picks for this week: Chiefs, Rams, Bears, Panthers, Ravens, Bucs, Bengels, Cardinals, Giants, Dolphins, Chargers, Broncos, Raiders, Steelers

Sony's New Edge Killer?

VisorCentral got word of Sony's new Clie PEG-T415 (how's that for a handle?) PalmOS-powered PDA. It is thinner than the Visor Edge, comes with Sony's nice 320x320 monochrome screen, and has an extra-powerful IR port for use as a universal remote control. Pretty slick stuff.

Don't Fear Anthrax

Finally we have journalistic proof that the average American has nothing to fear from the anthrax scare. Note: those of you with underdeveloped senses of humor need not (and, dare I say, should not) click on that link. Please. I'm begging you.

XP Launch

Today is the official launch day for Windows XP. Please try to contain your excitement.

J.t.Qbe comments: Thanks for the warning, A.T. I'd forgotten about it! This launch seems to have been very understated compared to previous revs of Windows. I remember standing in line at midnight when Win98 was released--not to buy, but to get the good deals at CompUSA!
