Pondering the Imponderable

I just got DOOM Legacy working under Linux. Talk about bringing back memories! Now we'll have to get certain folks named The Master and J.t.Qbe running it so we can play some serious nightmare DOOM co-op!

Carmack on D3D vs. OpenGL

id's John Carmack made a post on Slashdot on which is better: Direct3D or OpenGL. The most interesting comment is the fact that this whole debate may be rendered moot in the not-too-distant future. Thanks Shacknews.

Ben Hermans Interview

I posted an interview I did with Hyperion Entertainment's managing partner, Ben Hermans, on their port of Shogo: Mobile Armor Division to Linux. We discuss how well the port has sold, as well as the state of Linux gaming in general. Here's a snip from one of his answers to whet your appetite:
The problem with Linux gaming is that the Windows version will as a rule always be available sooner because the porting process takes time. Moreover, on Linux you don't have the economies of scale that you have on Windows so you will need to keep your prices higher than the Windows version. This again increases the appeal of the Windows version. The Windows games market has a very short life-span and games are subject to a continuous price-erosion.
Check out this interview and all my Shogo-related goodness at my Haus of Shogo.

Unreal II Interview

The Action Vault has an interview with Legend's Mike Verdu, the designer and producer for Unreal II. This interview gives a nice overview of the game and what we can expect to see in it. Not surprisingly, it is another game that will require me to upgrade my hardware. Thanks Blue.
