Q3A Win32 Installer Fix -- 3:35 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

id's Robert Duffy updated his .plan yet again with a temporary work around for the problem with the Win32 installer for the latest Quake III Arena point release. Here's the fix in his own somewhat linguistically-challenged words:

There is an issue if you download the full ( 25MB ) 1.29g install and apply it on top of 1.29f. The installer does not overwrite the existing baseq3/pak6.pk3 and missionpack/pak1.pk3. AUTO-UPDATE works just fine so if you have 1.29f it is best to do that anyway as the update is much smaller. The installer also works fine on any version prior to 1.29f. Most people will have just ran auto-update but for those that cannot or don't like auto-updaters can remove the above pak files before running it and it will work fine.

The game will run either way as the .exe is compatible with either set of pak files. Our install/setup person is out of town until tomorrow night. Once he is back we will get an updated setup that works properly.

id's Robert Duffy updated his .plan with news that some people are having problems getting the Win32 installer for the 1.29g Quake III Arena patch to work properly. Here's all we know:

I have seen a few reports of the full Win32 installer not properly installing the latest PAK3 files. Looking into this now, if there is an there is an issue, I'll get more info/fixes up tomorrow ( Saturday ).

Since I don't have Q3A installed on my Win98 partition anymore, I can't say if it works or not. However, I applied the patch to my Linux installation and it worked like a charm.

Sklyarov Remains Jailed -- 8:58 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Dmitry Sklyarov remains in custody after attempts by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) to get him freed failed. Sklyarov was jailed for allegedly violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by presenting information on Adobe's encryption scheme. Protests are being staged in cities around the world. I'm hoping that this goes to trial so that the DMCA's constitutionality can be challenged. The EFF and others should be able to provide enough support to send this to the Supreme Court if necessary. The last thing that DMCA supporters wanted was a martyr. They seem to have created one. Thanks Slashdot.

Palm Spins Off OS -- 8:44 pm CST, Update by A.T. Hun

Palm announced that it is going form a wholly-owned subsidiary for its OS business. Many have been wondering when Palm was going to do this. Hopefully we'll see more innovation on the software side of things now. Thanks Visor Central.

Q3A v1.29g Release Tonight -- 3:03 pm CST, Update by The Master

ShackNews has gotten word from id Software of a pending release of a new Quake 3 Arena version 1.29G patch. Steve has a list of fixes, but I'll wait for the release (5pm CST) to post the list.

A.T. Hun comments: They had better fix the names with spaces bug, although I don't see it on sCary's list.

UPDATE by A.T. Hun id's Robert Duffy updated his .plan with word that the patch has hit their FTP and some mirror sites. Note that this is once again a beta patch. Here's a few links for you:

UPDATE #2 by A.T. Hun I played for a little bit and have not been able to reproduce the names-with-spaces bug yet. The Linux version also applies your r_gamma setting to the menus so they aren't so dark any more. Good stuff so far!
