id Map Pack Fix

I just saw on this thread on the Quake 3 World forums that there really is a bug (story) with one spawn point in the hal9000_ta "An Iteration of Hell" map in the recently-released id Map Pack. A patch is promised that will fix the problem. Good to know that I wasn't just losing my mind!

Q3F 1H Released

Beta 1H of the Quake III Fortress mod for Quake III Arena (duh) has been released. 1H finally makes the mod compatible with the 1.27h patch. It also adds new maps and all kinds of goodies. Check it out if you are into that Team Fortress thing that is all the rage with the kids today. Thanks Shugashack.

Q3:TA Map Pack Interview

PlanetQuake did an interview with id's Paul Jaquays and the mappers behind the recently released id Map Pack. It details the original idea of the pack and the changes that went in to the individual levels.

Microsoft Says Free Software Threatens "Innovation"

Some things are just too surreal to be believable. Here's the latest: Microsoft exec Jim Allchin claims that freely available and openly developed software like Linux "could stifle innovation." Full details here. Uh, yeah. Just remember that when Micro$oft uses the term "innovation," it means "the Microsoft way of doing things"/"big-business." In that case yes, free software is a threat. This is just another variant of Microsoft's "free software is worthless" argument. Good for a laugh or two.

A.T. Hun comments: This is the worst example of FUD I've ever seen from M$, and that's saying quite a lot. The only thing that open-source endangers is precisely how far M$ has its head rammed up its [Editor's note: pardon A.T. He's been under a lot of stress lately what with losing the fingertips and all.] It's enough to make me chew my own face off.

id Map Pack Follow-Up

I gave all the maps in the id Map Pack a quick run-through last night. All of them seem very cool and are definitely worth the download. The only problem is that on hal9000_ta (An Iteration of Hell) there is a problem with one of the blue team spawn points. When I spawned in I could mouselook and shoot, but I couldn't move. Other than that, they are top-notch maps.

Threewave/CCTF Maps

This page has information on the Threewave/Classic CTF joint efforts at getting a huge (30-40 map) map pack for Quake III. This sounds awesome. I hope all the maps support all the Team Arena gametypes as well. Thanks Blue.

Roger Wilco Update

sCary got an update to the Roger Wilco spyware story yesterday from a Gamespy employee (Gamespy recently bought Roger Wilco, among other properties):
Roger Wilco was indeed one of the properties we acquired from HearMe just a month or so ago in our acquisition of Mplayer. We're still in the midst of making plans for the future, but I can assure you that spyware has no place in them. We do not condone spyware and don't plan on including it in any of our software.
Dubious comfort. In the meantime, don't download Roger Wilco. Thankfully the copy I have did not have the spyware stuff in it.
