Bleh

Okay, I finally got stubborn and killed the wrapping issues we've had with our trackers. The text can be cut off when it begins to get too long-to deal with that issue, I've added javascript to dump the full names into the status bar.

Q3A Instagib

Two instagib (one shot kill) mods for Quake III Arena have recently been updated to work with the 1.27 patch. One is Instagib which gives standard instagib with the railgun on any map. Instagib Plus adds the ability to use ANY weapon (I imagine that instagib with the machine gun would be pretty silly), an offhand grapple, and a configurable amount of spawn protection. Instagib is a simple idea, but its a lot of fun. Thanks Planet Quake for the links.

BitBoys and Carmack

In a recent interview with the BitBoys CEO (the graphics card company that somehow managed to exist without ever shipping a product), he mentions that id's John Carmack has seen their XBA technology and was behind it. Carmack wrote to the Tech Report to say that he has never seen it nor does he endorse them. Oops. Thanks Shugashack.

UPDATE 1/10/01 Gamers.com blew it. They misquoted the BitBoys CEO and have printed a retraction. You'd think something like that would be hard to misunderstand . . .

1.27h Speed-Up

I just ran a couple of timedemos with the new beta 1.27h patch for Quake III: Team Arena. Using the same settings that got me 30.2 fps in the Q3:TA demo, I'm now getting 36.6 fps with 1.27h. Even with more heavy-handed tweaking (vertex lighting, no gun, low-quality sky) I still get a better than 10% fps increase over 1.27g. My advice? Check this news item and download that patch!

UPDATE! The patch also seems to fix the single-player fraglimit bug (where the fraglimit for a level was set to what the fraglimit cvar was, instead of what it should be for that particular level) in Quake III Arena. Very cool. All the more reason to get downloading!

Q3:TA/Q3A BETA Patch

id's Robert Duffy updated his .plan with news of a new BETA 1.27h patch for Quake III Arena / Quake III: Team Arena. Here's a list of the fixes:Here are a list of mirrors: id Software, CD-ROM, and FilePlanet.

Test the Patch

id's Todd Hollenshead updated his .plan with a call for anyone interested in helping them test the latest server-side anti-cheat patch for Quake III: Team Arena. Check the .plan for all the IPs. Now if we could just track down the creators of these hacks and saw their faces off or something similarly pleasurable.

Antitrust

The subject of everyone's favorite trial is now a movie! Or something like that. Check out ZDNet's article about the new movie Antitrust, about a computer geek who goes to work for a giant tech company in the Pacific Northwest, then risks his life to tell the truth about that company's tactics. It has Linux. It has GNOME. It has Miguel de Icaza. Sounds promising!

My wife saw the commercial on TV and said, "That must be about Microsoft," though the company has a different name, of course. My favorite quote from the article: '"From the trailers, we couldn't tell if the movie was about [America Online] or Oracle," Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan said.' I haven't seen a movie in 2 years, but I may have to go see this one. . .

The Master comments: On the subject of movies, I really want to go see that Thirteen Days movie coming out that recreates the Cuban Missile Crisis. Hopefully it'll send the chills down my back that Titanic did :-)
