All About Carmack

Red Herring posted an article on id's John Carmack, talking about his business and programming philosophies and even getting into the "disagreement" that caused the firing of Paul Steed. The author is a little light in technical knowledge (saying that the GeForce3 is about to be released), but it is interesting nonetheless. Thanks Blue's News.

Super Bowl XXXVI

As a way to enable me to lose two ways, I'm picking the St. Louis Rams to win straight up, but the New England Patriots to cover the spread. There. Let the chortling begin.

The Master comments: Eeyore's prediction: Rams win, Patriots will not cover the spread. She hopes she's wrong.

The Master comments: And, she was. And no one could be happier :-)

EverCrack at $39.95/mo

This is today's sign of the apocalypse. Or at least that Americans have too much money. Verant is coming out with a new EverQuest service called EverQuest Legends. The kicker? It'll set you back US$39.95 per month. Here's a snip from Gamespot:
Sony Online Entertainment has announced EverQuest Legends, its upcoming premium subscription service for EverQuest, its popular online role-playing game. The new service includes a number of exclusive new features, such as new character tracking pages, an exclusive dynamic server with a limited population and new quests, a variety of unique weapons and armor, a new dynamic map, and several other services and features.
And you know what? There will be a bunch of people lining up to try this. P.T. Barnum was right. Thanks Evil Avatar.

Gnome and .NET

The Register interviewed Ximian's Miguel de Icaza on their efforts (dubbed "Mono") to port Microsoft's .NET to Gnome. I have mixed feelings about this. I can see how .NET could be beneficial to programmers, but I have a real fear of open source getting in bed with Billg. I do find it ironic that people griped about KDE being not all GPL. Now that it is, Gnome is backing away from the GPL. Go fig. Thanks Linux Today.
