What's New?

March 28, 2005

I was emailed a question about Shogo the other day which led me to reinstall the Linux version. Unfortunately, I could not get sound to work, even though ALSA is working and the OSS-compatibility modules were loaded. I was able to fix it by getting rid of the libSDL-1.1.so.0 that comes with Shogo and creating a symbolic link of the same name to my system libSDL. In my case, I did this: ln -s /usr/lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0 libSDL-1.1.so.0 Now sound works again! If I can only figure out how to lower the mouse sensitivity below what the options screen allows you to, I'll be all set.

What, an actual update? You bet! I've added the Haus of Shogo to the new Shogo Webring that has been set up by Karoshi. I've also begun the arduous process of converting all of my pages to XHTML 1.0 Transitional. The only page that is done is this one right now. You can verify that by clicking on one of the images at the bottom of this page. Why bother, you might ask? Well, I want this site to be some form of legitimate HTML so I can be guaranteed that it will display correctly in a variety of browsers on a variety of devices. In general, supporting standards is A Good Thing for the Web.

I saw on Linux Games that Titan Computer, the publisher of the Linux version of Shogo, is getting out of the Linux publishing business. I can't say that I'm shedding too many tears. They did nothing to make the game more easily available to American gamers. Unfortunately, the damage has already been done to Shogo's sales.

Happy Anniversary to me . . .

Today marks the third anniversary of the existence of the Haus of Shogo. Three years. That's hard to believe. Special thanks go out to all of our visitors for making this site what it is--whatever that might be.

Clan Fetish is planning a Shogo tournament for December 28. They are looking for custom maps with a winter theme. For more information, check out their website.

Effective immediately, I have resigned as PlanetShogo forum moderator. I just don't have the time to do it, plus I can't carry out some moderation functions unless I'm using IE in Windows. That's a problem since I primarily use Mozilla in Linux. I'm sick of the sniping and stupidity trying to pass as free speech there. I'm done with it.

What does this mean for this site? It's hard to tell. Obviously I have not been updating regularly. Everytime I think I should just kill it, I end up working more on it. It seems that Shogo 2 is a distant dream, if not a mirage. Right now I don't even have Shogo installed due to disk space constraints. I guess I'll just wait and see . . .

Coonz over at PlanetShogo has reappeared and reports that he may have a fix for all the problems people are having with Shogo and GeForce cards. You need to get this Windows registry file. This adds the CoolBits key which should be well-known to any hardcore NVIDIA user. Once that's installed, go into the NVIDIA properties and deselect vsync. I can't verify this since a) I don't have a GeForce-class card and b) Windows is no longer my primary OS. Remember that hacking your registry in Windows can result in pain, suffering, and spontaneous decapitation so use caution :)
